Homemade Laundry Detergent Update

If you've been reading this blog for awhile, then you may remember my posts about homemade cleaners and homemade laundry detergent back in March. I had been making and using homemade household cleaners for awhile, but the laundry detergent I made was the first batch.

I've been using that same batch of laundry detergent since March and finally had to make a new batch this week! I've really liked how well this recipe has worked in our HE front loading washing machine. I still need to use the occasional spray of Shout and some Oxi-Clean here and there, but I completely expected to have to with two little ones making messes on their clothes. Also, this detergent has caused zero skin issues on my little ones that both have very sensitive skin. The only downside is that it doesn't have very much smell to it, meaning your clothes don't smell dirty, but don't smell the "clean" smell we are all used to with our scented detergents.

I was surprised to see how long the batch of detergent lasted our family. I do on average 6 loads of laundry per week, so to get almost 9 months from one batch of detergent was much longer than I expected this to last us!

One batch of detergent fills 2 and 3/4 Costco bottles of detergent (the bottle pitctured in the original post with the step by step instructions) and I use less than 1/2 cup per load.

I just wanted to remind you that there are ways to save on your everyday necessities.

Have you made your own laundry detergent? If so, what did you think of it?

  1. Love homemade laundry detergent. Would not consider buying store bought ever again after making my own. It is more eco-friendly and economical.
